Nihon Falcom Announces New “Dragon Slayer Project” for Its 45th Anniversary

Japanese game developer Nihon Falcom has officially announced a brand-new initiative called the “Dragon Slayer Project” to celebrate its 45th anniversary on March 9, 2026. The upcoming project is aimed at console platforms, and a teaser website has already been released, sparking excitement among fans.

While full details remain under wraps, the project is expected to be related to the legendary Dragon Slayer franchise—one of the most influential early titles in the action RPG genre.

A Legendary Franchise Returns

Originally released in 1984 for the PC-8801, Dragon Slayer was marketed as a “New Type Real-Type Role-Playing Game.” The title stood out thanks to its:

  • Simple and intuitive controls
  • Unique puzzle-solving mechanics
  • Character progression through experience and items brought back home
  • Combat that involved physically colliding with adjacent enemies

These innovative systems helped the game gain widespread acclaim and established it as one of the pioneering titles of early action RPG history.

Expanding Into a Beloved Series

Following the success of the original game, several notable titles were released under the Dragon Slayer brand, including:

  • Xanadu
  • Romancia
  • Sorcerian

Each entry introduced its own unique gameplay ideas and gradually built a loyal fan base.

The sixth entry, Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes, marked a major shift for the franchise. It adopted a command-based battle system and focused more heavily on narrative, characters, and world-building.

This title ultimately gave birth to the long-running The Legend of Heroes franchise, which later evolved into the highly acclaimed The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky and the broader Trails series.

What Could the New Project Be?

At this stage, Nihon Falcom has not revealed whether the Dragon Slayer Project will:

  • Revive a classic entry in the series
  • Reimagine the franchise for modern platforms
  • Or introduce a completely new world within the Dragon Slayer universe

Whatever the case, the announcement has already sparked speculation and excitement among long-time JRPG fans. More information is expected in future updates.
